Google Maps updates to 5.2, focuses on Hotpot and Latitude

A new Google Maps update has hit the Android Market, bringing the app to Version 5.2. The latest update from the Google Maps team mostly focuses on the social aspect.

For those of you that use Google's Hotpot, you will now be able to tweet your reviews using the integrated rating widget. The reviews will be appear in searches, Google.com/hotpot, and on Place pages.

In addition to the new tweetable Hotpot reviews, Google Latitude users will now be able to "ping" their friends. The new ping feature will appear in the notification bar. So, now instead of texting, emailing, or calling them, you can just ping them to meetup.

Google has also reminded us that you can also check-in using Google Latitude. The check-in feature was added last month to version 5.1. Not the biggest update in the world, but still, the Google Maps team is always innovating and updating the app.

Here's the changlog:

  • Post your reviews of places to Twitter
  • Check in at places with Google Latitude to earn status and share with friends
  • Ping Latitude friends to ask them to check in. Friends will get a check-in request notification from you.
  •  Search for a place to check in from Latitude if it's not in the suggested list of places.

Full deets are at Google's blog post. [Google Mobile Blog]

Sneaker speakers kick out the jams

We've seen homemade speakers crafted from all sorts of unusual objects, but these new sneaker speakers built for a design competition by professional sneaker customizer Nashmoney might just be the new king in town. As you can see, they started out as a regular pair of Nike Air Force 1s, and all of the speaker components are built right into the sneakers, including the amplifier and the controls. Of course, they're also one of a kind, but you can find some pictures and details of the build process at the link below if you have an old pair of kicks you'd like to try to retrofit yourself.

Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5

torus
As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You're usually looking at a "wall" of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn't really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus' 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It's also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It's an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.

iPad 2 arrives at the FCC

Right on cue, the three radio variants of the iPad 2 -- that's the WiFi A1395, GSM A1396, and CDMA A1397 -- have arrived at the FCC's labs for stringent testing. We're sure Uncle Sam's testers will stay on task checking up on RF interference and not just spend their time melting faces with Photo Booth, but we understand the temptation.

[Thanks, Laura]
